That painting reminds me of when I worked at Cowley, Oxford. The frames that were used for holding the car body parts whilst being spray painted ended up looking like that. We used to break large chunks of it off. Which left you with a block of “plastic†in all the shades of car paint. We would then shape these blocks into interesting shapes and then “T-cut†them to get a nice finish. They were then sold to a stall holder in the covered market in Oxford who would then sell them to students as jewellery.
